Maine has more races per mile of road than just about anywhere, and until now nobody was putting them all in one place every week. That's what this is. This weekend alone, Brewer sends a few thousand people out for local cancer care, Hermon debuts a brand-new 5K and 10K at its Summer Sizzler, Old Orchard Beach runs its Breakaway 5K along the coast, and Westport Island closes it out Sunday on the midcoast. Cool starts, sunshine, and light wind — you picked a good weekend to be a Maine runner. Here's your first edition. Let's get moving. |

Here's what's on the line this weekend, from the coast to the Penobscot Valley. THE COURSE — This one starts and finishes at the Lafayette Family Cancer Institute in Brewer, and that's the point: the walkers and runners on the 1K, 5K, and 10K are moving through the neighborhood around the very building where the money they raise goes to work. Cyclists head out on rolling Penobscot Valley roads from 12 miles all the way up to a century. THE PEOPLE — This is Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center's biggest community fundraiser, and it's been growing since 2010 — more than seven million dollars raised over its history, all of it staying local for cancer research and patient care. Survivors, families, caregivers, and whole workplace teams show up. Around 1,600 people took part last year. RACE MORNING — The cyclists start rolling in the dark at 5 AM, and by the time the 9 AM walkers and runners get their staggered send-off, the whole campus is a celebration — survivors recognized, teams in matching shirts, and more cowbell than you'd think one parking lot could hold. It's less a race than a moving community, and nobody checks your pace. THE DETAILS — Saturday, August 15, Brewer. Register at ctcchallenge.org for any distance, or take it virtually from anywhere. Packet pickup runs Friday 12–4 PM under the tent between the Cancer Institute and the Cianchette Building. And the weekend doesn't end Saturday — Sunday brings the car show (gates at 10) and motorcycle ride (registration 9, ride out 10:30) on the same grounds |

Races fill up and prices climb — usually the same week you were 'about to sign up.' Coming fast on the calendar; if any of these are on your list, don't sit on it: Firebird Trail Races: Windham — Saturday, August 22 · 13-mile, marathon, and 50K trail distances [CONFIRM registration status + link] Blueberry Cove 13.1: Tenants Harbor — Sunday, August 23 [CONFIRM status + link] Bradbury BadAss: Pounder 50K & Half-Pint 25K: Pownal — Sunday, September 13 [CONFIRM status + link] Build rule going forward: this section publishes only confirmed registration developments — opened, closing, price change, or capacity as stated by the race itself. Edition #1 carries dates verified from running-community calendars; status lines get confirmed with each race before publish |

First year for both races, so nobody has a course story yet — you get to write it. Here's what's confirmed: both start at 8:30 AM from Veteran's Memorial Park in front of the Patricia A. Duran School on Billings Road, with check-in from 8:00. Hermon Rec has published both routes — the 5K map is at hermonme.myrec.com/documents/5kmap.jpg and the 10K at hermonme.myrec.com/documents/10kmap.jpg. Parking is on-site at the school. One thing worth knowing: the car show starts setting up at 8 in the same complex, so arrive on the early side and follow the volunteers' directions |

Nothing derails a race morning faster than a packet problem. This weekend: Champion the Cure: Friday, August 14, 12–4 PM · under the tent between the Lafayette Family Cancer Institute and the Cianchette Building, Brewer Hermon Summer Sizzler races: Race morning at check-in, 8:00 AM, Veteran's Memorial Park — shirts handed out at check-in Breakaway 5K: Milliken Street parking lot, Old Orchard Beach [CONFIRM window] RACE-DAY CONDITIONS |

Bangor-region race morning (Champion the Cure, Hermon): Saturday starts mostly clear in the upper 50s — about as good as August gets — warming toward 79 under full sun with a light northwest breeze at 6 to 9. What it means: it'll feel cold in the corral and perfect by mile one, so throw-away layer or no layer at all, and don't let the cool air talk you into a first mile you'll pay for. Sunday on the midcoast trends warmer, near 80 with a slight afternoon shower chance — morning racers finish long before it matters. [BUILD STEP: pull the coastal forecast fresh for Old Orchard Beach and Westport Island on send day.] Forecast from the National Weather Service. And it's Maine — look out the window before you trust anybody, including us. . |

The Cool Morning Trap A 57-degree start feels like a superpower — and that's the trap. Cool air hides effort, so the pace that feels easy in mile one is often 20 or 30 seconds faster than you planned, and the bill comes due late. The fix is simple: run the first mile by your watch, not your legs. Hit your planned split even if it feels like jogging, bank nothing, and spend the gift of a cool morning where it actually pays — the second half. The best racers this Saturday won't be the ones who feel great at mile one. They'll be the ones who still feel great at the finish. |

Kim Stewart was taking part in Champion the Cure before cancer ever touched her life. Then a family member was diagnosed — and then, at 33, she heard the words herself: breast cancer. She got her care close to home, and it changed why she shows up every August. These days she takes the Challenge, in her words, "so that everyone can have access to the same kind of cancer care" she had. Saturday morning in Brewer, she'll be out there again — one of a few thousand reasons this event matters. Source:Bangor Daily News, August 11, 2026, via Northern Light. |

MESA-Maine keeps endurance sports moving across this state — and the back half of the season is loaded. Three dates to circle right now: Lincoln Marathon, Half, 10K & 5K — Sunday, September 20, 7:30 AM Four distances, one morning in Lincoln. Whether you're chasing a fall marathon, tuning up with the half or 10K, or lining up for a first 5K, there's a start line with your name on it. One note when you register: the RunSignup listing still carries the older 'Great Lincoln Marathon' name — same race, same morning. River Driver 50 Miler — Sunday, September 20, 4:30 AM, Lincoln Same day, same town, a different animal entirely. Fifty miles starting headlamp-dark at 4:30 AM — the longest day on Maine's fall calendar, for the runners built for it. And here's the beauty of the shared date: the 50-milers will still be out there when the marathon crowd starts at 7:30, which makes Lincoln the place to be that morning whether you're racing or cheering. Waterville Marathon, Half, 10K & 5K — Sunday, October 4, 7:30 AM Two weeks later the Kennebec Valley gets its turn — four distances through Waterville on October 4, right as the foliage starts doing its thing. If Lincoln is your race, Waterville is your redemption run. If Lincoln isn't, Waterville is your target. [SANDY: add the MESA registration link(s) for each race before publish — direct to the entry pages, per the link standard.] |

This is where the results live — who ran fast, who ran far, who crossed their first finish line, and the photos to prove it. Edition #1 goes out before the weekend, so this space belongs to you starting now: run something this weekend, then hit reply with your result, your milestone, or your picture. Next edition, this section fills up with Maine runners — maybe you. That's this week. Run well, wave to the volunteers, and we'll see you at the starting line. — Sandy |
